Like most little children playing school, I wanted to be Teacher. The teacher was boss and told everybody what to do and they did it--ultimate power to an 8 year old. The desire to teach intensified as I grew older. Teaching was no longer about power but about curiosity and discovery. It seemed like teachers were always playing “What if?” Eventually, I became a teacher and joined their game. Then i found out that the best way to learn is to teach.

Because I think discovery is at the heart of education, the “What if?” is at play in my workshops. Principles and elements of design are explored in an immediate and personal way. Each exercise is an adventure requiring risk, courage, ingenuity, curiosity and flexibility. The reward is the great Aha! upon greeting the unexpected.

Heading into dark places where imagination and emotion wait can be scary. An artist learns how to trust and in a workshop setting, where teacher and fellow artists take the same journey, that trust comes a bit more easily.

Workshops

The following workshops are focused on the beginner or one who carries the beginner’s mind. All materials, except for scissors, are provided.

So What is Art Quilting
and How Do I Get Started? - 2 1/2 hours
An overview of what is called an “art quilt, ”its place in the world of quilting and the world of art;  a selection of materials and techniques used in its construction. This is a basic introduction for the person who desires more information before starting work in this medium.

The Weight of a Line and a Shape - 2 1/2 hours
Hands-on exploration of some of the principles and elements of basic design using black and white fabric. This workshop may be helpful to the person curious about movement, repetition, variety, unity, emphasis and balance.

The Value of Color - 3 hours
A basic look at color and value; how they differ and how each may serve the other; exploration into pure hues, tones and shades, the moods of each, how colors change under the influence of their companions. This workshop offers a chance to play with color and value within a design or created work.

“I Don’t Know Where to Start!” - 4 hours
A hands-on adventure in creating an art quilt; intuitive, spontaneous, improvisational. Artists are guided to trust the relationship of the not-knowing mind and one’s emotional sensibilities through a series of introductory exercises and then the creation of a single work that yields a surprise. This is for the brave and the want-to-be-brave, and/or for the carefree of heart.
